JACK CHOKWE

Jack Chokwe is an experienced professional language editor and proof-reader affiliated with Professional Editors' Guild.  He has more than 15 years’ experience as a language editor. Jack Chokwe has obtained four degrees (BA, BA Honours in English, BA Honours in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) & MA in TESOL) with different institutions. Jack is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom.

He has also taught in the Department of English (Applied Language Studies Unit) at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and currently works at Bureau of Market Research at the same university. Jack is immersed in an intensive research environment and does not only focus on mere language editing and can give constructive feedback on dissertations and theses. He is also a scholar who has published in peer reviewed journals. He has written a book entitled: Academic Writing in English Second Language Contexts: Staff and Students’ Perceptions adapted from his master’s dissertation.

 Published an article entitled: The Acquisition of Academic Writing Skills Model

for English Second Language students: From elementary to tertiary education.

 Published an article entitled: “Students’ and tutors’ perceptions of feedback

on academic essays in an open and distance learning context” in Open Praxis

 Presented a paper entitled: “Academic writing in an ODL context: Perceptions

and experiences of first year university students” at Unisa’s first ODL

Conference held in September 2012. The article has been published in the

Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences and Education Research (September

2013).

 Published an article entitled: “Factors impacting on academic writing skills of

first year students” in the Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences and

Education Research (November 2013).

 Co-presented a conference paper entitled: “An investigation into the

institutional response of public universities in South Africa to HIV/AIDS” in

a conference hosted by UNISA in 2011. The paper has been published in the

November 2013 edition of Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences and

Education Research.

 Completed a Certificate in Outcomes Based Assessment in Higher Education

with UNISA in 2010.

 Presented a paper entitled: “The under-usage of myUnisa as an online

learning tool by Unisa English Access students” at the International Language

Conference held Stellenbosch in 2009.

 Presented a paper entitled “Does the use of code-switching in poetry and

debate sessions of the Reading & Writing Centre enhance second language

learning?” at SAALA Conference in July 2006.

 Presented a paper on “Academic Development through Reading & Writing

Centres : The Polokwane Experience” at HELTASA Conference held in Durban
